Comfortable and connected: Domestic terminal upgrades
New Zealand’s busiest domestic terminal welcomed 8.5 million travellers in the 2024 financial year. On a typical day, about 20,000 people pass through the terminal, placing increasing pressure on a building that has been serving Aotearoa since 1966.
While the new domestic jet terminal is under construction and set to open in 2029, Auckland Airport is continuing to invest in maintaining a safe and comfortable experience in the present domestic terminal.
A new wayfinding system has been introduced to simplify the journey from the front door to the departure gate. Bathroom facilities have been upgraded, with more parent rooms, separate accessible toilets, and three new gender-neutral bathrooms to improve comfort and accessibility for all travellers.
The food court before security screening has been refreshed, offering an improved layout and more choice. Beyond security, a new mezzanine floor has added 200sqm of extra space with comfortable seating, device charging, and improved WiFi.
These upgrades will help keep the terminal fit-for-purpose until the new facility opens, ensuring the airport experience continues to meet the needs of travellers today, while building for the future.
